& Subscribers
In case you will be in New York City this weekend, but are not on their email mailing list!
Please join the NEW YORK chapter of the INTERNATIONAL NETSUKE SOCIETY at its next meeting: Sunday, May 17, 2009 2:00 pm Wu Liang Ye Restaurant 215 East 86th Street (between 2nd & 3rd Aves., next to PC Richards) We are looking forward to a talk entitled "Captured At Work", which will be presented by Denise Cohen. Throughout the political stability of the Edo Period (1615 - 1868), Japan experienced an economic prosperity that reveals the emergence of an affluent mercantile and artisanal culture. Netsuke carvers found in the latter strata of society an abundance of subjects to illustrate daily activities and occupations. In tandem, the Print artists of the 18th to 19th centuries reflected the customs, fashion, and trades of their society. A brief analogy will bring together the print artists and netsuke carvers who, inspired by the Hokusai Manga drawings and other ukiyo-e subjects, have captured for us the essence of common people at their professions. Please join us for an informative and fun talk, and please feel free to bring any netsuke of people at their professions to show the group. Please also bring cash for your food/drink. We expect to be in the back of the restaurant. RSVP to: Diane Drinnon, 212-828-7088 or ddrinnon@mac.com. Best Regards, Diane Drinnon Norman L. Sandfield, Constant Contact Coordinator | |||||
