The San Francisco Chapter gathered at the home of Anne and Alan Fisher on Sunday, September 13, 2009. Old and new member collectors shared some tasty treats and had a glass of wine.   The meeting was started by our new President, Marsha Vargas Handley, who gave us  her recollections of the history and interesting stories of Japanese netsuke dealers in the Bay area in recent times including her own history as a art dealer.   Then the recent INS NY convention was discussed as well as the Kirchoff collection sale, and the possibility of a meeting of the three West Coast chapters between conventions.

Life in Miniature: Ceramic Netsuke from the Silverman Collection
At the Toledo Museum of Art,
October 1, 2010 – February 27, 2011, Gallery 18

Japanese netsuke have delighted collectors for years with their small size, craftsmanship, wit and whimsy. Now the public can join in the fun as a collection of 200 rare ceramic netsuke donated to the Toledo Museum of Art by noted collector Richard R. Silverman go on display at the Museum this fall. Life in Miniature explores the iconography of these decorative and useful objects and their depiction of everyday and fantastic subject matter. Also shown are Japanese screens depicting Kyoto, where many of the objects were made and sold, and a kimono with inro and netsuke illustrating how these delightful fashion accessories were worn. A catalog accompanies the exhibition. Free admission.

The Toledo Museum of Art has a renowned collection of Japanese netsuke developed over the last 100 years. The Museum’s reference library is also home to the Norman L. Sandfield Library of Netsuke and Oriental Art.

London Netsuke Symposium
November 5th-8th 2010
Rosemary Bandini and Max Rutherston are delighted to announce a four-day netsuke symposium to be held in London in November 2010, coinciding with Asian Art in London Week and the first of the Ted Wrangham auctions.

Many of our European and American collector friends have long been asking us to organise an event in London. Some of you will remember the lively and highly successful conventions that used to be held in London, but it has now been 20 years since such an event took place here. Cost has always been a factor, but this is a time when we can take full advantage of the weakness of sterling. The symposium will be held at Dartmouth House, The English Speaking Union, in Charles Street, close to the historic centre of Mayfair. There will be a full programme of lectures and workshops each morning, with a fork buffet lunch, followed by viewing of the dealers' room. Our hotel accommodations are within a minute or two's walk of the location.

  Tokyo / Japan
The Kyoto Seishu Netsuke Art Museum, Japan’s first museum exclusively dedicated to netsuke, is pleased to announce that its summer public opening has been scheduled for the month of July, 2010.

The museum holds approximately 2,500 netsuke dating from the Edo period to the present and exhibits 500 selected pieces to the public four times a year. It is located near Nijo Castle in a remodeled samurai residence. Highlighted as this season’s special program is our exhibition of the Hideyuki Sakurai’s work pieces collection that is outstanding especially in the themes of men, animals & plants (especially flowers).

Please find below more details about the summer public opening.
